Elon Musk attended a campaign event for Germany’s controversial Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party over the weekend, just ahead of the upcoming election in the country next month.
On Saturday, AfD candidate Alice Weidel shared a video from the event on X, featuring a speech by Musk that lasted about ten minutes. This appearance came shortly after Musk’s recent appointment as an advisor to newly-inaugurated U.S. President Donald Trump. The AfD, a party known for promoting German nationalism, limiting immigration, and preserving German culture, has faced criticism for being a far-right populist movement.
Musk’s speech occurred just weeks before Germany’s election on February 23, which he stated could “determine the fate of Europe, possibly even the fate of the world.” During his address, Musk emphasized the importance of protecting German culture and reducing bureaucracy in Brussels, with the support of Weidel and the crowd, who also celebrated Trump’s recent election. Trump’s political stance, including his deregulatory and anti-immigration policies, aligns closely with those of the AfD.
