Today, the whole country is celebrating Martyrs’ Day to remember the heroes who gave their lives for the establishment and restoration of democracy, and for independence at different times. Martyrs’ Day is observed every year on 16th Magh, starting from the year 2007 BS.
On this day, a morning procession is organized from Shanti Park Ratnapark to the Martyrs’ Memorial in Lainchaur. The Prime Minister, Ministers, senior government officials, elected representatives, security forces’ band teams, and marching groups will participate in the procession and offer their respects at the Martyrs’ Memorial in Lainchaur.
From 10th to 16th Magh, Martyrs’ Week is observed with various programs. Since 2012 BS, under the leadership of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Martyrs’ Day has been officially celebrated on 16th Magh every year.
During the struggle for independence, on 10th Magh 1997 BS, Shukraraj Shastri was executed in Pahchali, Teku, on 13th Magh, Dharma Bhakta Mathema was executed in Sifal, and on 15th Magh, Gangalal Shrestha and Dashrath Chand were executed in Shobha Bhagwati by the Rana rulers.
Before the year 2063 BS, special programs were held at the Martyrs’ Gate by the government to mark the day. After that, special programs started being organized at the Martyrs’ Memorial in Lainchaur. Various organizations also celebrate Martyrs’ Day with programs at the Martyrs’ Gate.
